Full-mouth rehabilitation: what it actually involves

- Some mouths can't be fixed one tooth at a time. Years of wear, old fillings breaking down, missing back teeth overloading the front ones — eventually the bite itself has collapsed, and patching individual teeth is like re-tiling one corner of a sinking roof.
- Full-mouth rehabilitation means rebuilding the whole chewing system — teeth, bite height, jaw position — as one planned project. As prosthodontists, this is the work our specialty is trained for.
- ## Who actually needs it
- Teeth worn short from decades of grinding or acidic diet
- Many missing back teeth, with front teeth chipping from doing a job they weren't built for
- Mouths with a long history of piecemeal dentistry — a crown here, an extraction there — that no longer meet properly
- Jaw joint pain or fatigue that traces back to a collapsed bite
- ## How we plan it
- Everything starts with records: photographs, X-rays, impressions and a careful measurement of your existing bite. We then plan the final result before touching a single tooth — often with a trial version in temporary material that you wear and chew with for some weeks. You approve how it feels and looks first; the final ceramic work copies what you approved. This trial stage is the difference between a rehabilitation and a gamble.
- ## How long it takes
- Typically several weeks to a few months, in stages. Urgent problems first (infections, hopeless teeth), then foundations (implants, root canals, gum treatment), then the rebuild itself. You are never left without teeth — temporaries carry you between stages.
- ## What it feels like afterwards
- The comment we hear most often isn't about appearance. It's "I forgot what it was like to chew on both sides." Patients eat faster, choose food freely, and stop hiding their smile in photographs — usually within a fortnight of the final fit.
