Clear aligners or braces? A practical answer for working professionals

- Every week someone sits in our chair holding an Instagram ad for aligners and asks whether it's "as good as braces". The comparison the ads won't make for you is the honest one.
- ## Where aligners genuinely shine
- For mild to moderate crowding, spacing and relapse after childhood braces, aligners are excellent — nearly invisible in meetings, removable for client dinners, and kinder to gums because you can actually floss. For the professionals we treat around Kalyan Nagar and HRBR, this is usually what matters most.
- ## Where braces still win
- Severe crowding, significant bite corrections, and rotations of round teeth like premolars remain more predictable with fixed braces. An aligner can only push where plastic touches; some movements need the three-dimensional control of a bracket and wire. A clinic that treats every case with aligners regardless is selling a product, not planning treatment.
- ## The three questions that actually decide it
- Will you wear them 22 hours a day? Aligners out of the mouth move nothing. If you graze through the day or forget things easily, be honest with yourself — braces don't depend on discipline.
- How complex is your case? This is an X-ray and examination question, not a preference question.
- Does anyone review you? Mail-order aligners with no clinician examining your gums and roots are how we end up seeing avoidable damage. Whoever provides the aligner, insist on physical reviews.
- ## What both options share
- Retention. Whichever appliance straightens your teeth, a retainer afterwards is not optional — teeth have memory, and the relapse cases we treat are almost always abandoned retainers, not failed treatment.
- Our advice: don't choose the appliance first. Get the examination, understand your case's complexity, and then choose. Half the time the honest answer is "either will work, pick the one that fits your life" — and that's a much nicer decision to make.
